Hari Moong Dal Khichdi / Split Green Gram Khichdi

We Indians usually refer to Khichdi as our 'Soul Food'. Khichdi is a one pot meal which is a mixture of rice along with different combinations of lentils. My Mom used to make this khichdi for us sometimes. Especially when I had fever and was not in the mood to eat anything. She would always make this because of its nutritious value and as it is mildly spiced. Somehow, I used to hate it then. Two years back, when I visited Mumbai, my Mom made this same khichdi for my son and I just had a bite while feeding him. I asked Mom immediately, which khichdi it was and she said, "This is the same khichdi Ialways made for you, don't you remember." But this time, I loved this khichdi. From then on, I cook this khichdi very often at my home. I love to cook this healthy moong dal khichdi when I'm short of time or when I'm too lazy to cook. It requires very minimum ingredients, quite easy and quick to make too and very easy to digest as well. My hubby and I love this simple and comfort food a lot, but my son prefers to have this with lots of butter drizzled on it.

Ingredients:-
  • 1 cup rice
  • ½ cup chilkewali moong dal (split green gram)
  • 1 big onion (sliced)
  • 2 green chillies (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • salt to taste
Method:-
  • Wash dal and rice well. Soak in water and keep aside.
  • Meanwhile, heat ghee in a pressure cooker.
  • Add onions, green chillies and cumin seeds.
  • Saute till onion turns golden brown.
  • Drain the water from the dal & rice.
  • Add it to the pressure cooker. Mix well.
  • Add 3 cups water and salt to taste.
  • Pressure cook for two whistes.
  • Wait for the cooker to cool and then open the lid.
  • Serve hot with raita or mint chutney.
Notes:-
  • If you want to make it spicier, you may add 1tsp red chilli powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ¼ tsp turmeric powder,a pinch of all spice powder (garam masala) and asafoetida (hing) to it while tempering.
  • This khichdi can be made for toddlers too, by avoiding green chillies and adding more water to make it mushy. Drizzle with ghee or butter.
