Matar pulao

I am going to Mysore for the weekend at my MIL'S place. Since, I had some last-minute chores to complete, I decided to cook something quick and easy. What could be better than this. Matar pulao is a quick, easy and tasty one pot meal. This is one of my favorite recipes. My Mom used to make this along with chicken korma for us.

Ingredients:-
  • 1 cup rice
  • ½ cup green peas
  •  1 bayleaf
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 peppercorns
  • 2  green cardemoms
  • 1 black cardemom
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 1 large potato (peeled & cut in big chunks)
  • 1 tomato
  • 3 green chillies
  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 2 tbsp yogurt (whisked)
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp red chilli pdr
  • salt to taste
Method:-
  •  Wash and rinse rice well. Soak in enough water.
  • Meanwhile, heat ghee in a wok.
  • Add onions, cloves, green cardemom, black cardemom, peppercorns and bayleaf.
  • Saute till onion turns brown.
  • Add ginger-garlic paste, green peas and potatoes.
  • Saute till potatoes obtain a slight brownish colour.
  • Grind together tomatoes, green chillies and cumin seeds.
  • Add this ground paste along with yogurt, red chilli pdr and salt. Mix well.
  • Cook on slow flame till oil separates the mixture.
  • Drain the excess water from the soaked rice and add it.
  • Saute for a minute.
  • Add 3 cups water and cook on fast flame.
  • Stir once or twice in between.
  • When water evaporates, simmer the flame.
  • Cover and cook on slow flame for 8 -10 minutes till done.
  • Serve hot with salad and raita.
Notes:-
  • You may avoid red chilli pdr if you want.
  • You may also try this recipe with mixed vegetables such as, cauliflower, french beans and carrots.
Happy Cooking!!
